Running torrents at all means that your IP address is a known member of the swarm to at least some computers and they may share their peer list with yet more computers. That's how bittorrent works. All those computers may try repeatedly to connect to your network to get the files you downloaded. That means your router has to handle those connection attempts. If you want to run bittorrent you need to make sure the software is configured for appropriate connection limits and always remove torrents from the software for a period before shutting off the software. That allows your software to leave the swarm so it doesn't just appear offline, it actively denies the connections and closes them.Running better firmware on the router such as DD-WRT or OpenWRT will probably have better connection management and higher limits for concurrent connections as well.
